Feikema Farms is a 3 generation family farm started in 1950 by Clarence and Ann Feikema. They moved here from the Renner, SD area and began farming on a quarter section of land. They raised 4 boys on the farm and 2 of them, Bob and Chuck, began farming with Clarence when they finished high school and their military duties. Bob and Chuck began the expansion of what is now Feikema Farms Inc. The dairy operation was phased out and they focused on the beef cattle operation. Currently, cattle are fed in a combination of outside yards and a mono-slope barn at the home location and at several other sites in the area.
In 2000, Shawn Feikema (Chuck's oldest son) graduated from college and joined the operation and in 2002, Mike, (Chuck's second son) did the same.
Also employed by Feikema Farms Inc. are 5 full time men, Shannon Hubbling, Dusten Hubbling, Marv Hubbling, Riley Siebenahler and Eli Bakken, as well as many part time and seasonal help.
Grain farming is a perfect companion to the livestock aspect of Feikema Farms Inc. and it has grown from a quarter section of land to now over 7000 acres. Most of the corn is grown for feed and is harvested as silage, ground earlage and dry corn. Soybeans, Wheat and cereal crops are also grown in rotation and marketed as a cash crop. We also ulitilze cover crops, strip tillage and no till to improve soil health. One of the biggest reasons for our top end yields is our access to manure. We look for farms that are in close proximity to hog barns or our feedlot. Eighty percent of the ground we farm has a history of manure application and we are trying to raise that percentage to 100%. A good history of fertility because of the manure application is also the reason we choose to keep corn at sixty percent of our rotation. We believe that manure adds 20 - 30 bushels per acre on corn and 3 - 8 bu/A on soybeans.
Feikema Farms also includes the companies Circle F Farms and Hup Farms, Inc.
